installer death loop

just had foxy proxy installed to experiment with.

restoring a sesssion, asked to update FP, did (more fool me) and got an endless loop of FP tabs opening and a dialog asking about Tor.

basically caused me to have to restart FF without restoring my session, which meant i lost a whole heap of links i wanted to bookmark. grrrr.

anyway, i'm sure its a great add-on, apart from this bug.

Hi, I can't fix the bug

Hi,

I can't fix the bug unless you provide a way for me to reproduce it.

Thanks,
Eric

Same problem here

I'm using Session Manager 0.6.4.6.

I installed FroxyProxy 2.8.14 and got the 3.0.9 update to Firefox. When I restarted FF, I got HUGE amount of modal dialogs, many of them just containing OK and Cancel buttons but otherwise empty! Clicking those away got me into more modal dialogs asking about whether I want to use Tor with or without FoxyProxy. I don't want to use Tor at all, so this question was totally irrelevant. Regardless what I answered I got another modal dialog asking what Tor port I want to use. If I pressed cancel I got another modal dialog box saying that the Wizard was canceled. Despite of this it seemed like the questions would start from the beginning. But I cannot be sure, because if I accepted the port, I got a configuration window and then a modal dialog congratulating me.

This whole thing was repeated numerous time, I guess once for each tab (or window) I have open. I have 144 tabs (and dozens and dozens windows) open so I had to click at least 700 times to get away from the modal dialogs.

In addition to this it appears that about one new tab for each existing open tab was created showing the FoxyProxy home page.

I took a screen shot, but I guess I cannot attach it here.

To say it nicely, this was the most horrendous Firefox plugin installation experience I have had ever. And I have installed dozens of different plugins.

Based on the OP's comment I'm now afraid that this will happen every time the plugin is updated...

I think the main fault is that FoxyProxy is doing something once per tab or window instead of once per app.

The other problem is that the "wizard" is a haphazard collection of modal Yes/No dialogs. Do a real wizard with pages of several settings and next, previous and cancel buttons. Or drop the wizard and make the configuration easy enough so that you don't need any wizards.

You said you don't know how to reproduce the problem. Have you tried repeating what the OP did? Have multiple tabs and windows open while you install the plugin and have the session restoration feature on (either the build-in or one of the plugins). If you can't repro it like this, I suggest you review your code. A user can't give much more details, especially if you don't ask any. I will just uninstall the plugin if it does go into the same dialog hell once more.

Hi, I didn't really

Hi,

I didn't really understand the OP. I do understand your comments, so thank you. I didn't have time to investigate the problem for release 2.9, but instead the Tor wizard no longer starts automatically. This was something I wanted to do anyway as a lot of FoxyProxy users don't even use Tor.

Thanks for your patience...the experience you describe sounds terrible. You won't get that anymore with the new versions.

Even with latest update, FoxyProxy updated page shows too often

Every time FoxyProxy is updated and a session is restored, I see this.

Most plugins show some sort of "XYZ has been updated" page the first time they are launched. That's a good thing.

But when FoxyProxy has been updated, it shows the exact same page over and over. The multiple pages are all displayed as tabs in the same window - and which window that is seems to be random. There seems to be one of the "updated" pages for every window that was open in the session.

Maybe the "updated" page should go in its own named window? I don't really care if the page gets loaded 25 times as my 25 windows are restored, as long as there is only one window / tab to close.

Same problem persists

I restarted my Firefox last week and got the 2.9 update (dated Apr 22nd). The wizard didn't trigger this time, so I didn't get those multiple modal dialog boxes. However, otherwise the experience was the same: for each of my open 57 windows I got a new tab in one of my existing windows showing http://foxyproxy.mozdev.org/releasenotes.html.

This problem combined with the "Status indicator alternating in every window" and the feeling that Firefox is not as responsive as before leave me no choice but to uninstall FoxyProxy for now.

You can disable the display

You can disable the display of http://foxyproxy.mozdev.org/releasenotes.html by doing the following:

1. Enter about:config into the address bar
2. Type extensions.foxyproxy.last-version into the filter
3. Double-click the item
4. When prompted to "Enter string value", enter 999

You will never see the release notes page again after upgrading.

As for the"Status indicator alternating in every window", could you please elaborate? What does that mean?

Thanks,
eric
