How come proxies can't open banned sites like Facebook and Youtube like VPN service?

I am in Iran and sites like FB and Youtube are filtered. I currently use a VPN to use these sites. I was under the impression that proxy service does the same. I am in the 3-day trial period with a US Foxyproxy server and these sites cannot be accessed through the proxy. I have whitelisted them and still negative.

Proxies and VPN are completely different services. If your internet access is being filtered then a HTTP proxy won't help here, so I would recommend keep it up with VPN.
