history.com uses brightcove for providing their internet video service, so do lots of other sites. One of the options in brightcove is to perform geo filtering. I found that the only URl that was required to get videos working on history.com (providing I set up tor with US exit nodes) was the following absolute URL:

This is not specific to the hisory channel, so will also affect other sites which may use brightcove as their video service provider.

I've since discovered that the pattern should be *.brightcove.com* (without the c.), the original pattern works some of the time for some reason;)
