Getting "Error reading string resource" every time I start Mozilla

I am using the latest (Jan 9, 2008) foxyproxy. It works while FF is up. If I close it and restart it, it starts giving me the Error reading string resource: error with different resource names

No need to check. If you never changed it and you're in the US, you're using en-US. It would be very helpful to me if you could provide the names of the strings. In your initial message, you wrote "Error reading string resource: error with different resource names". But the message shouldn't say "with different resource names". It should have one or more resource names listed. Can you tell me what some of them are? (The first one would be most helpful; the others probably aren't as helpful)

Anyway, to fix the issue on your system, close Firefox and delete foxyproxy.xml. You'll find this in the firefox profile directory (google search "Firefox profile directory" if you don't know its location on your hard drive). Restart firefox and it should be fine now. If not, then you have a bad installation of FoxyProxy and you should uninstall/reinstall it.

That is very bizarre. Somehow the installation is getting corrupted. Can you try with a new Firefox profile? That should definitely do the trick

Microsoft Windows XP Professional 5.1.2600 Service Pack 2 Build 2600. It is a copy one which is a ghost version got online. hehe~~~ I am a citizen complied the law.

I have the exact same problem. Get the probably all strings in the resource file :-) There are many OK's to click away in the warning boxes.

Some additional data:

Windows XP Professional, SP3, fully up-to-date with patches
Firefox 3.06: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.9.0.6) Gecko/2009011913 Firefox/3.0.6 (.NET CLR 3.5.30729)
I also run Tor (0.2.0.34) using Vidalia (0.1.10)

Furthermore I have Torbutton (1.2.0), Firebug (1.3.2), WebDeveloper (1.1.6), Firecooly (0.8), Foxmarks (2.7.2) and a handful of other extensions installed. Just let me know if you need more info and good hunting :-)

OK, I have replicated the problem by using the QuickLocaleSwitcher firefox addon. It looks like most languages besides English are missing translation strings. I can't believe I missed this. I apologize sincerely.

I cannot reproduce this with FoxyProxy 2.8.11 (latest version), only with the code in Subversion (trunk).... and that version hasn't been released yet, so you should not be using it.

Where did you get your version of FoxyProxy? Did you get it from http://addons.mozilla.org or somewhere else?

Please give me step-by-step instructions on how to reproduce this so I can fix.

I'm having the same problem

I'm having the same problem as the people above. I'm running XP SP3 up to date, Firefox 3.0.6. I downloaded my version of FoxyProxy from addons.mozilla.org. The same thing happens with me - when I installed FoxyProxy it works fine, but if I close Firefox then open it again I get a bunch of errors, the same ones machinecatzm mentioned. Those go away eventually, but then everytime I try to load a new webpage, I get a foxyproxy.tab.patterns.label error. If you need any other info from me just let me know!

if you can check for a few things,
1) if you have a add-on called User Locale Switcher what is it set to. this info would be useful. (also does disabling the addon & restarting firefox help?)

2) goto Help > about & a window will come up at the bottom you will see something like
Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.9.0.6) Gecko/2009020911 Ubuntu/8.10 (intrepid) Firefox/3.0.6 (.NET CLR 3.5.30729)
Mine says that I'm using the of Firefox 3.0.6 with the en-US locale on Ubuntu 8.10
None of this data is secret, each time you visit a website firefox tells the server this info,

3) are you using any other add ons, If so what ones. (or have you disabled all other addons besides foxyproxy & are still having problems.)

I will try to recreate this issue & troubleshoot it. but on my XP Pro rig with all the updates, I have not ran into it yet.
Hugh has already posted this & I will start from there. (I am wondering if torbutton & foxyproxy are fighting each other, since both can handle Tor's socks5 proxy, I have never used torbutton. 19:00 GMT I will start on this.)

Yes, please please please post the language you are using for Firefox (and FoxyProxy). I suspect this is a problem only for non-English users, but I am not sure and testing is difficult.

I currently have FoxyProxy and Tor disabled (the add-ons are enabled but in the lower right hand corner of my browser it says "FoxyProxy: Disabled Tor Disabled"), because with FoxyProxy enabled I get a "Error reading string resource: foxyproxy.tab.patterns.label" error whenever I load/refresh a website. and my browser doesn't work with just Tor enabled.

I downloaded the latest

I downloaded the latest version but it didn't change anything.

However, I noticed that if I set FoxyProxy to "use proxy 'Tor' for all URLs" or "use proxy 'Default' for all URLs" then the "Error reading string resource: foxyproxy.tab.patterns.label" error does not pop up. It's only when I have it set to "Use proxies based on their pre-defined patterns and priorities." This is even when I disable my other configurations and only have the Tor and Default configs enabled.

also, I noticed that I right-click on the the FoxyProxy button in the lower right hand corner of Firefox, I get six errors:
Error reading string resource: foxyproxy.options.label
Error reading string resource: foxyproxy.options.accesskey
Error reading string resource: foxyproxy.options.tooltip
Error reading string resource: foxyproxy.advancedmenus.accesskey
Error reading string resource: foxyproxy.advancedmenus.label
Error reading string resource: foxyproxy.advancedmenus.tooltip
but I'm not really concerned about that now. I just thought I'd mention that in case it has something to do with the current problem.

Yesterday FoxyProxy was automatically updated and since then, everytime I start Firefox, I get a warning box saying: Error reading string resource: regex
After clicking OK,, Firefox starts and works with no problem. I am using a bunch of other extensions, including Quick Locale Switcher. It is set to my default installation locale: sk-SK.
Firefox and all my extensions are up-to-date.
