FoxyProxy breaks WWW_UrlOpen in Firefox on Windows XP

Hi,

FoxyProxy breaks the DDE Function in Firefox once the plugin is loaded. Example: I click on "Start"->"Execute" and in the window that opens I type "www.google.ch". When Foxyproxy is disabled firefox (because it's the standard browser) opens and loads www.google.ch

If I activate FoxyProxy and do them same I get an error message from windows "URL Open failed"... and so on. But Firefox still opens www.google.ch. If you google for this problem you can read that a lot of extensions in the past days had this problem, for example google toolbar. They break the DDE Message/Callback sent from windows therefore windows complains about having not found the URL.

But most of these problems date back to 2007 and were fixed long ago. I'm very surprised that FoxyProxy still breaks this. You should really fix this ASAP as a lot of people I know use the "Start"->"Execute" Function to open web pages and it's really not an option to disable foxyproxy until you need it and then to re-enable it until you're done. Then again disable.

Dont' you agree.

Best regards,

Marc

Hi Marc, This has been a

Hi Marc,

This has been a known issue for a long time. It's even in the FAQ under "Double-clicking a local HTML file on Windows displays the message "Windows can not find the file. Please check the file name and try again.""

A work-around is here: http://kb.mozillazine.org/Windows_error_opening_Internet_shortcut_or_loc...

If I knew why FoxyProxy caused this problem, or how, I would fix it. Unfortunately, I have no idea... and could use some help with it.

The problem only seems to exhibit itself in non-English installations of FoxyProxy. Are you using en-US (English)?

using german os but english firefox

That's very interesting. I'm using a german windows, but as I don't like the german firefox version as I'm not used to it I have installed the english one. So, it seems the culprit is not in non-us firefox installations but in non-us windows versions.

Is it possible that the DDE command or the windows verb used to open URL's is different in other windows versions and does foxyproxy use this?

Unfortunately the workaround you provided did not work for me. If I disable all DDE callback on all filetypes firefox re-enables them next time it starts. How did you make this change permanent?

Thanks for your help

Thanks for the info. I've

Thanks for the info. I've updated the FAQ entry so it mentions that it's non-English *windows* instead of non-English *Firefox*.

As for the workaround, did you read all of the associated links on http://kb.mozillazine.org/Windows_error_opening_Internet_shortcut_or_loc... ? There is a *lot* of information.

I do apologize for this behavior. I know it must be very very frustrating. I just do not know how to fix it, and I am a very experienced software developer. I would even pay someone to fix it if I could find the right "someone".

no problem

Hi Eric,

Meanwhile I was successful using the registry hack described there deleting the ddeexec keys. So it's working now.

Also I can understand your frustration not beeing able to fix it as I'm professional software myself and the worst thing is things not beeing reproducable or bugs you don't know how to fix.

Best regards,

Marc
