But FoxyProxy warns no wildcard was used and I am asking for an exact match.
Needless to say, accessing:
http://host/~user fails to meet this pattern I have added.

this appears more of an issue with firefox handling websites.
you entered above http://host* but when used as a link it's displayed as http://host*/ & i am thinking firefox is doing this automatically
I can't recreate the problem you listed above using what you gave me alone, but I am using foxyproxy 2.8.11 ff 3.05 on both xp vista & Ubuntu Linux & you said you need to access http://host/~user & it doesn't work if you could try a pattern of http://host/* instead of http://host* & reply if that works

Yea, all of the mails just got dumped to mozdev's mail servers when the cron job is running again. My own mail account got über spammed from here yesterday :)
